Celebrating the Performing Arts – Riverside Foundation for the Performing Arts
The Riverside Foundation for the Performing Arts was founded in 2006 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The mission of the Riverside Foundation for the Performing Arts is to promote, enhance, and fund education and participation in the performing arts by members of our local community at all economic levels. To realize their mission, the Foundation offers three major programs to the local community.
Summer Camp for Students
Every year the Riverside Foundation offers a free theater summer camp to low-income and at-risk children. The training they receive at the summer camp is a strong vehicle that enables the participants to increase their individual self-esteem, to focus on their abilities, and to develop an interest in the cultural arts. The children participate in music (voice), choreography and acting training sessions. During the two-week camp, participants also rehearse for the end of camp Showcase, which is a live public performance held on the last day.
Dare to Dream – Children Theatre Sponsorship
The Riverside Foundation Dare to Dream program specifically targets Title I schools in our area. Many of the students in these schools come from low-income families who simply cannot afford to purchase tickets to a play. Under this program, Riverside Foundation can sponsor local elementary school children to attend a performance of in the Riverside Center for the Performing Arts Children’s Theater.
Awards for Excellence in High School Theater
In 2018, Riverside Foundation spotlighted local high school musical performers in the first ever awards program and ceremony. Riverside Foundation’s goal for the program is to recognize, reward, and encourage talent and achievement in musical theater among area high school students.
In this local Tony Award-style production, high school students compete for recognition in a variety of categories, from hair and makeup, to choreography and scenic design, to best actor and actress, and more.
In addition to holding the Annual Awards program to showcase the local high school talent, Riverside Foundation awards two theater-based scholarships. During the Annual Awards ceremony, the Riverside Scholarship and the Rollin E. Wehman Award are presented to deserving high school students interested in pursuing a career in theater.
This year’s Annual Awards Program for High School Theater will be held on May 12 at the Riverside Center for the Performing Arts. This year’s high school productions (The Foundation is considering both musical and dramatic entries this year!!!) under consideration include:
- Fredericksburg Academy – Matilda the Musical
